Previous Adaptation Attempts

The show was originally optioned and bought by Bravo in 2013, shortly before the book was released. The show entered series development and was going to be called, "Heiresses" and be part of their new soap-opera line-up.[2]

It was said to be centered on elite Manhattanites and upper-east-siders. It existed due to a deal between WHTV and Alloy Entertainment. The deal was to help create a fresh, new, scripted series on Bravo.[3] The show was never greenlit but was owned by Bravo until 2017 when ABC acquired the rights.

An official synopsis of the show released by Bravo teased the show. Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo were set to be executive producers.

Based on the upcoming novel from Sara Shepard (Pretty Little Liars, The Lying Game), this one-hour drama follows one of the most prestigious and wealthy families on the Upper East Side who have built their entire fortune on the business of diamonds. Due to a clause their grandfather placed in his will, only his granddaughters are set to inherit his massive fortune... These are the heiresses. After the death of their cousin, the remaining heiresses try to figure out if the family curse is real or not, and if not, who killed their cousin, and more importantly, which one of them is next on the hit list?[4]
